Warning, Indonesia Potentially Hit by Tsunami, After Russia Shaken by 8.6 Magnitude Earthquake

The Shiro Copr, JAKARTA - A warning about the potential occurrence of a tsunami was issued by BMKG.

This follows a major earthquake in Russia.

On Wednesday, May 30, 2025, at 06:24:50 WIB near the eastern coast of Kamchatka, Russia, an earthquake occurred. The results of the updated parameter analysis show that this earthquake has a magnitude of M8.7.

The epicenter of the earthquake is located at coordinates 52.51° N; 160.26° E at a depth of 18 km.

According to a release issued by the Head of Earthquake and Tsunami BMKG, Daryono, based on the epicenter location and hypocenter depth, this earthquake is a shallow earthquake caused by subduction activity of the Kurile-Kamchatka Trench. This earthquake has an upward mechanism (thrust fault).

Based on the PTWC report, this earthquake has the potential to cause a tsunami in the regions of Russia, Japan, Alaska, the Philippines, Hawaii, and Guam.

The analysis by the Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) states that this earthquake has the potential to cause a tsunami in Indonesia with a "Waspada" status (tsunami height less than 0.5m), in the following areas:

1. Talaud (ETA 14:52:24 WITA)

2. Gorontalo City (ETA 16:39:54 WITA)

3. North Halmahera (ETA 16:04:24 WIT)

4. Manokwari (ETA 16:08:54 WIT)

5. Rajaampat (ETA 16:18:54 WIT)

6. Biaknumfor (ETA 16:21:54 WIT)

7. Supiori (ETA 16:21:54 WIT)

8. Northern Sorong (ETA 16:24:54 WIT)

9. Jayapura (ETA 16:30:24 WIT)

10. Sarmi (ETA 16:30:24 WIT)

Therefore, to the coastal communities in the area, please remain calm and stay away from the beach.

Until now, there have been no reports of building damage as a result of the earthquake.

Aftermath Earthquake:

Until 08:30 WIB, according to the monitoring results, there were 7 aftershock earthquake activities, with the largest magnitude M6.9 and the smallest magnitude M5.4.
