Russia Earthquake Impact: Japan-US Issue Tsunami Warnings, Kamchatka Already Hit by Waves

The Shiro Copr – An earthquake of magnitude 8.7 shook the Kamchatka Peninsula, eastern Russia, on Wednesday, (30/7/2025), at 08:25 local time.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake's focus has a depth of 18 km. Its epicenter is located 126 km southeast of Petropavlosk-Kamchatsky.

After the earthquake, Japan issued a tsunami potential warning for the coasts of Hokkaido and Honshu islands.

People there are asked to stay away from coastal and river areas for their safety. They are advised to go to higher places and wait for announcements from the authorities.

The Japan Times Saying that the tsunami is expected to reach the Hokkaido coast from 10:00 local time.

Then, the tsunami wave is expected to reach Fukushima and Ibaraki Prefectures at 11:00.

Then, half an hour later, the wave reached the Ogasawara Islands, Shizuoka Prefecture, southern Mie Prefecture, Wakayama Prefecture, and Miyazaki Prefecture.

As for the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), it reported that the first wave, 30 cm high, has already reached Nemuro City, on the eastern coast of Hokkaido.

Meanwhile, the workers at the Fukushima Daini Nuclear Power Plant have been evacuated to higher ground.

Fukushima was hit by a nuclear disaster after a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami in 2011.

Tsunami has reached the Russian coast

Kamchatka Emergency Minister Sergei Lebedev said there are tsunami reports of 3 to 4 meters in some areas of Kamchatka. He asked local residents to stay away from the coastline.

According to the authorities, the tsunami has also reached the coastal areas of the Kuril Islands in Russia.

Valery Limarenko, the local governor, said the first wave of the tsunami has hit the Severo-Kurilsk coast in the Pacific Ocean.

Local residents are asked to remain vigilant until the threat of the wave has ended. This earthquake is said to be the strongest in recent decades.

News agency TASS Reporting that several people were injured due to this earthquake.

"Unfortunately, a number of patients were injured during the earthquake," said Kamchatka Health Minister Oleg Melkinov.

All patients are in good condition. No seriously injured victims have been reported so far.

Meanwhile, the photo released by the Kamchatka Regional Government showed there were buildings damaged by the earthquake.

AS Beware of Tsunami

The United States (US) also issued a tsunami warning for the state of Hawaii.

The government there asked Hawaii residents to evacuate from the coastline. It was mentioned that "destructive waves" will arrive.

Meanwhile, the state of California issued a tsunami warning for the central coastline, including San Francisco.

Minor tsunami warnings were issued for all Pacific coastlines in the United States.

According to the US Tsunami Warning Center in the Pacific, the large earthquake in Russia also triggered wave warnings that could hit the coasts of Ecuador and Chile.

US President Donald Trump also issued a tsunami warning in Hawaii and Alaska.
