Shiro Copr.CO.ID - JAKARTA . A number of Islamic banks recorded an increase in the ratio of problematic financing ( Non-performing financing /NPF) or bad credit, within the first six months of 2025.
According to data from the Financial Services Authority (OJK), the NPF ratio of Islamic Commercial Banks (BUS) was at 2.21% in May 2025. This figure increased from 2.10% in the same period last year, and 2.18% in April 2025.
Similarly to BUS, the NPF ratio of Sharia business units (UUS) also shows an increasing trend. As of May 2025, the NPF of UUS was at 2.41%, up from 2.23% in the same period last year, and 2.40% in the previous month or April 2025.
Some banks, such as PT Bank BCA Syariah, also recorded an increase in NPF in the first half of 2025 to 1.75% from 1.36% in the same period last year.
Ina Widjaja, Director of BCA Syariah, explained that NPF can be triggered by various factors, ranging from macroeconomic conditions, internal management, to the characteristics of certain industries.
"NPV will certainly always exist. The most important thing is how we can solve it quickly and prevent it from having a wider impact," Ina said during the company performance presentation on Wednesday (8/6).
Ina further stated that there was an increase in NPF in the sector small medium enterprise (SMEs) as well as consumers because they are faced with various challenges.
According to him, challenges in the SME segment indeed require resilience. Therefore, when economic actors face a storm, when purchasing power decreases, they must demonstrate that they still have resilience/energy to know their performance.
Ina added that BCA Syariah has its own internal platform in maintaining NPF to keep it under control, not only relying on regulatory provisions.
In maintaining the quality of financing, they carry out customer selection and analysis processes, continuous monitoring, up to strengthening relationships with customers.
BCA Syariah is also optimistic that the quality of financing or NPF can be maintained below 2% until the end of 2025.
PT Bank Mega Syariah also recorded an increase in the non-performing financing ratio or NPF to 0.99% in the first half of 2025 from 0.92% in the first half of 2024.
Hanie Dewita, Head of Corporate Secretary Division of Bank Mega Syariah said that the figure is still much better compared to the average of the Sharia banking industry, which is around 2%.
"Such a small increase is still considered reasonable given the significant growth of Mega Syariah Bank's financing business, which grew by 29.84% year-on-year to Rp 9.55 trillion in the first half of this year," said Hanie.
To maintain healthy and sustainable financing quality, the company will always prioritize risk management based on regulatory provisions and refer to Basel Accord dan market best practices .
In addition, Bank Mega Syariah has established Risk Acceptance Criteria (RAC) across the entire bank, as well as specific RAC for priority sectors that are the focus of financing.
PT Bank Muamalat also recorded an increase in NPF in the first half of 2025 to 3.90% from 2.25% in the same period last year.
Muamalat Bank Commissioner, Andre Mirza Hartawan said, this is due to the decline in financing, which caused both gross and net NPF ratios to increase.
Total financing of Bank Muamalat decreased sharply by 16.03% year-on-year in the first half of 2025 to Rp 17.46 trillion.
"Forward with the continued growth of financing in the right focus is expected to significantly improve quality assets, sustainable profitability, as well as a stable capital position," he said.
Other Sharia banks that also recorded an increase in NPF in the first half of 2025 are PT Bank BTPN Syariah, which rose to 3.14% from 3.05% in the same period last year.
Unit Usaha Syariah (UUS) of PT Bank CIMB Niaga also recorded an increase in NPF to 2.08% from 1.40%.
