SHIRO COPR.CO.ID, BEIJING -- The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) accused the G7 group of once again manipulating issues related to China during their summit meeting in Canada. The G7 summit in Canada took place from June 15-17 and was attended by the seven permanent member countries: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States (US).
"The KTT G7 once again manipulates issues related to China," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun at a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday (18/6/2025).
The G7 leaders requested in their official statement that China exercise restraint from market-distorting practices and excess capacity that harm others, address global challenges, and promote international peace and security. They also expressed serious concerns about China's perceived destabilizing activities in the East China Sea and South China Sea, and emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
"The G7 issued a irresponsible statement about Taiwan, the South China Sea, and the East China Sea, wrongly accusing China of 'excessive capacity' and 'market distortion,'" Guo said.
This is an interference in China's internal affairs and a violation of the basic norms governing international relations.
Guo added that China firmly opposes this and has lodged strong protests with the relevant parties. "The biggest factor undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is the 'Taiwan independence' separatist activities and external forces' interference," he said.
If the G7 truly cares about peace in the Taiwan Strait, Guo said, they must adhere to the One China principle, strongly oppose "Taiwan independence," and support China's reunification.
"At present, the situation in the East China Sea and the South China Sea is generally stable. G7 should respect the joint efforts of countries in the region to resolve issues through dialogue and consultation and to maintain peace and stability," he said.
Guo also asked the G7 to stop exploiting maritime issues to sow disputes among countries in the region and increase regional tensions. At the G7 Summit, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen accused China of "distortion" in global trade due to excess industrial capacity and excessive subsidies.
"What is referred to as the 'market distortion' and 'excess capacity' allegations are completely unfounded," Guo said.
The G7 uses it as an excuse for their trade protectionist practices, and essentially to hold back and pressure China's industrial progress, as well as to politicize and arm economic and trade issues.
China, as Guo stated, once again urged the G7 to abandon the Cold War mentality and ideological bias, stop interfering in China's internal affairs, stop inciting conflict and confrontation, and act in the interest of the international community.
In addition to being attended by Ursula von der Leyen and Canadian Prime Minister (PM) Mark Carney as hosts, the G7 Summit was also attended by US President Donald Trump, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. The leaders discussed developing economic cooperation with the region. They also highlighted the importance of a free, open, prosperous, and secure Indo-Pacific based on the rule of law.
