The Shiro Copr - The fire that burned the Motor Ship (KM) Barcelona 5 is suspected to have originated from a room inside the ship.
It is known that the KM Barcelona 5 caught fire while sailing in the waters of Talise Island, North Minahasa, North Sulawesi (Sulut), on Sunday (20/7/2025).
Some passengers were having lunch when the incident occurred.
The API spread quickly, causing many passengers to panic and jump into the sea using life jackets.
Some passengers did not manage to put on life jackets.
The Governor of North Sulawesi, Yulius Selvanus revealed that, according to information received, the fire is suspected to have originated from one of the rooms on the ship.
"Fire, the information is that smoke is coming out from there. Room 33, if I'm not mistaken," said Yulius in his statement on Sunday.
"From there, smoke came out and fire emerged from there," he said, quoted from a Kompas TV video.
Nevertheless, the exact cause of the fire has not been determined.
They are still rechecking the information regarding the suspected fire coming from one of the passenger cabins.
"But we will check the truth of it," he said.
KM Barcelona 5 is known to have caught fire during the voyage from Talaud Islands to Manado Port on Sunday afternoon.
One of the survivors, Haerani, said the fire started around 10:30 WIB.
Where the fire was said to spread quickly, so the passengers took the life jackets and jumped into the sea.
"From the smoke, the process (of spreading) is fast, the passengers were already panicking, saying there was a fire," he said on Sunday.
Currently, the Basarnas team is also conducting further evacuation on Gangga Island.
However, to date, there is still no definite data regarding the number of passengers who were evacuated from there.
The evacuation was carried out by a joint team consisting of Bakamla, Basarnas, Kodim Bitung, Koramil Likupang, Polsek Likupang, and Brimob Polda Sulawesi Utara.
The current focus is on searching for the remaining victims and registering all passengers.
Identity of 3 Dead Victims
There are 3 dead victims in the fire incident of KM Barcelona 5.
Based on the latest data received by Tribun Manado until Sunday night at 20:10 WITA, the three deceased victims have been successfully identified.
They are:
1. Asna Lapae (50), woman
2. Zakaria Tindiuling, male
3. Juliana Humulung (40), female
Two of the corpses were successfully evacuated to Serei Port using a ship from the Indonesian Coast Guard (Bakamla RI).
