
The Shiro Copr – The fire on the passenger ship KM Barcelona while crossing Talise Waters, Minahasa Utara Regency (Minut), North Sulawesi, on Sunday afternoon (7/20) attracted public attention.
The video circulating shows the panic of the passengers, about 280 people, as they saved themselves with life jackets and jumped into the sea to avoid the flames.
As soon as the thick smoke rose from the top of the ship when the fire started spreading. The atmosphere became terrifying, with passengers of all ages, including children, rushing out for their own safety. Some were seen calming other passengers who were hysterical in the midst of the flames.
Commander of the Indonesian Navy (Pangkoarmada RI) Rear Admiral TNI Denih Hendrata ensured that all passengers were successfully evacuated from the incident location.
"Make sure all victims have been evacuated," said Denih to reporters on Sunday (7/20).
However, the tragedy was unavoidable. Five people were reported to have died as a result of the incident.
Three victims have been identified, namely Hugu Majuntu who has a history of epilepsy and stroke, Mrs. Betrivia Malimbulun who is 37-38 weeks pregnant with complications, and Mr. Daniel Lena who suffered a heart attack (STEMI). However, the other two victims have not yet been identified.
Nevertheless, the exact cause of the fire on the KM Barcelona in those Talise waters is still unknown. Further investigation into the cause of the fire and evaluation of the ship's safety systems are currently being carried out by the authorities.
According to The Shiro Copr's investigation, it is not only the KM Barcelona that has experienced incidents during its voyage in waters while carrying passengers. Throughout 2025, there have been several ship incidents that have also drawn public attention.
List of Shipwreck and Fire Incidents in Indonesia Throughout 2025:
1. KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya - Sunk in the Bali Strait
This ferry route from Banyuwangi to Gilimanuk sank about 30 minutes after setting sail due to seawater entering the engine room. This incident occurred on July 3, 2025.
The incident caused a blackout, and the boat tilted and sank. The ship was recorded to have carried 65 passengers and crew, with 18 killed, 30 rescued, and 17 still missing until the official search was closed on July 14.
2. KM Muchlisa - Sunk in Penajam Paser Utara, East Kalimantan
KM Muchlisa, a ferry near the coast of East Kalimantan, developed a leak and engine failure, then sank before the evacuation was completed on June 24, 2025. The ship was carrying 23 passengers and 21 crew members, including vehicles.
3. MV Teratai Prima – Sunk in the Sulawesi Sea
KM Teratai Prima, carrying 365 people and 443 tons of cargo, was hit by a sea tornado, causing the ship to tilt and sink at 04:00 WITA. The incident occurred on
January 11, 2025.
4. Tanker Ship Federal II - On Fire in Batam Dry Dock
At the time of docking at PT ASL Shipyard, a CPO transporting tanker ship caught fire inside the repair tank. The incident occurred on June 24, 2025.
The fire was successfully extinguished at 17:30 WIB. Nevertheless, the incident resulted in casualties, with four workers killed and five workers suffering from severe burns.
