SEPUTAR CIBUBUR - Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated again after former US President Donald Trump openly threatened to launch a military attack against Tehran.
In his latest statement, Trump demanded that Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, unconditionally surrender following the ongoing escalation of armed conflict between Iran and Israel.
According to NBC News reports, Trump held an emergency meeting with his national security advisors in the White House Situation Room on Tuesday evening local time.
One of the main topics discussed was the possibility of direct military action against Iran. An official who was privy to the contents of the meeting stated that a U.S. attack is now being considered as a serious option.
In a social media post on Truth Social, Trump revealed that the US knows exactly where Khamenei is hiding. He called Khamenei an easy target, but hinted that a decision to attack him would not be made anytime soon.
"We will not finish it, at least not for now," Trump wrote. He also emphasized that his main goal is to avoid civilian and US military casualties.
Trump also emphasized diplomatic escalation toward an ultimatum. "UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER!" he wrote firmly in the following post, clarifying the US position toward Iran.
The threat came two days after media reports revealed that Trump had previously vetoed Israel's plan to kill Khamenei.
Although the Trump administration officially stated that it was not involved in Israel's preemptive attack on Iran last Friday, which triggered five days of cross-border skirmishes, Trump's recent statements indicate that the US is now prepared to consider direct military intervention as part of its support for Israel.
Directed Attack Options: Is Fordo the Target?
Intelligence sources mentioned that one of the potential targets being considered in a potential US attack is Iran's underground uranium enrichment facility in Fordo.
The New York Times reported that these facilities can only be destroyed using US military "bunker buster" bombs, one of the strongest conventional weapons available.
The Pentagon is reportedly strengthening its military presence in the Middle East. NBC reported that additional aircraft carriers and warships have been moved to the Gulf region, following previous deployments to help Israel counter missile attacks from Iran. ***
