Many Instagram Accounts Blocked Without Clear Reason, Users Suspect AI Malfunction

Many Instagram users have complained that their accounts were suddenly blocked or suspended without explanation in recent weeks. They suspect that the automated system based on artificial intelligence (AI) used by Instagram's parent company, Meta, is the cause.

So far, Meta has not provided an official response to this phenomenon. However, many users have complained about it on social media platforms such as Reddit and X. Users report that their accounts are being disabled even though they have not violated Instagram's service terms or community policies.

Citing Meta's latest quarterly report (29/5), the company indeed uses AI to moderate various negative contents and users who are considered to violate community guidelines on several of its platforms, including Instagram.

The AI system with large language models (LLM), which are used to determine whether content violates policies, as well as to remove content or ban accounts that fall under illegal categories, is suspected to be the cause of the mass account bans.

Some users report that their appeals have been ignored. They have not received any response from Meta despite submitting official identification as part of the verification process.

"I have filed several appeals, uploaded my ID, and tried contacting Meta through all official channels, but I have been completely ignored. It feels like I am shouting into the void," wrote a Reddit user with the username u/Dyrovicious, as quoted by Techcrunch on Monday (June 16).

Meanwhile, other users have complained about limited access to reach Meta customer service, except for those who subscribe to the verified account, a paid service that offers priority access for content creators and businesses.

In the Reddit community specific to Instagram, nearly all of the top posts in recent weeks have been dominated by discussions about this wave of bans.

On platform X, the official Instagram account of the company is flooded with user comments pleading for the company to take action immediately or at least issue a public statement.

A petition on Change.org demanding clarity on the account blocking has gathered more than 4,000 signatures.

Some users have considered litigation. class action They believe that Meta has been negligent in addressing the impacts of allegedly misdirected automatic moderation systems.

Not only did they lose their personal accounts, but Instagram users stated that the bans had a significant impact on their livelihoods. "This is my livelihood, my full-time job. I am heavily dependent on Instagram," said a Reddit user with the account u/Paigejust.

A gym owner with the account u/CourtShaw also expressed their disappointment: "This ban directly affects my business and all the hard work and branding I have built for my gym and my students," he said.

This issue is further exacerbated by serious allegations against some accounts, such as child sexual exploitation (CSE), which can permanently damage reputations. Some users falsely accused express great concern as these allegations can have long-term impacts on their careers and personal lives.
