China-Korea Investors Interested in Giant Sea Wall Project

The State Secretary Minister (Mensesneg), Prasetyo Hadi, mentioned that several countries have shown interest in becoming investors for the construction of the giant sea wall (tanggul laut raksasa).

However, some of those countries have not yet officially become development investors for the giant sea wall to this day.

"Some have informally already. There are from China, then friends from Korea. Yesterday, the Indonesia-Korea forum expressed interest. God willing," he explained at the National Palace, Central Jakarta, Wednesday (6/18/2025).

Prasetyo targets the construction of the giant seawall to take place this year. He reminds that land subsidence continues to occur in the capital until now.

On the one hand, the northern area of Jakarta is also often flooded by tidal floods. The giant seawall is referred to as the solution to both land subsidence and tidal flooding.

"Nah, right now it's in the process, continuously we formulate it, and if later on, as I mentioned, if we truly feel it's very necessary, we will make it ourselves for the giant sea wall or sea embankment on the north coast of Jakarta," said Prasetyo.

Previously, President Prabowo Subianto was set to seriously pursue the construction of a massive sea wall from Banten to East Java. The construction of this sea wall is estimated to cost around 80 billion US dollars.

Menurut Prabowo, pembangunan giant sea wall sejatinya telah tertuang dalam perencanaan Badan Perencanaan Pembangunan Nasional (Bappenas) sejak 1995.

"Imagine, 30 years ago [planning for development had been planned], if I'm not mistaken. But we did not lose heart, there is no more delay now, there is no need to talk much anymore. We will do it immediately," he explained during the official closing ceremony of the 2025 Infrastructure Conference in Central Jakarta on Thursday (12/6/2025).

I said that the giant seawall would be 500 kilometers long, stretching from Banten to Gresik, East Java. Building the seawall is expected to take 15-20 years.

However, the construction of a giant sea wall in North Jakarta is estimated to take only 8-10 years. The cost is estimated to be around eight to ten billion US dollars.

Prabowo emphasized that the construction of the giant sea wall in Jakarta will be financed by the Central Government as well as the Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov Jakarta). Considering that the 2025 Jakarta Regional Revenue and Expenditure Budget (APBD) will be the highest government budget in the country.
