$3.2 Trillion from the Pentagon: OpenAI Ready to Create AI National Security Guard of the USA

JAKARTA CITY - OpenAI, the company behind the AI chat platform ChatGPT, secured a $200 million or approximately IDR 3.2 trillion contract from the Pentagon for US national security.

This fantastic agreement was announced on Monday, June 16, 2025. OpenAI stated its goal is to "preserve democracy" from increasingly intense global competition, particularly from China.

Through this contract, OpenAI will develop an AI prototype to address national security challenges for the US, both in warfare and corporate realms.

This project will be carried out in the National Capital Region, including Washington DC and its surroundings, and is scheduled to be completed by July 2026.

Although this is the first OpenAI public agreement to be disclosed, the company was previously involved in US national security initiatives.

In December 2024, OpenAI partnered with military contractor Anduril Industries to develop AI for anti-drone operations.

Collaboration includes developing AI to process and develop sensitive data quickly, reducing human operators, and enhancing situational awareness.

Then in January 2025, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman joined other Silicon Valley executives along with President Donald Trump in announcing Project Stargate.

The project with a $500 billion investment in US computing infrastructure aims to support the development of AI in the future.

In the same month, OpenAI introduced a version of ChatGPT designed specifically for the US government, called ChatGPT Gov.

OpenAI said that the specific software will run on specialized hardware, such as Microsoft Azure cloud services.

In this way, US government agencies are able to manage their security, privacy, and compliance requirements independently.

At the end of January 2025, the world was shocked by the emergence of DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup that claims its product is superior to ChatGPT in terms of cost and operations.

The following month, Altman said at a meeting in Washington that OpenAI is committed to helping the US government maintain "America's advantage in AI" to protect "democratic values."

In April 2025, OpenAI developed a new social media platform similar to Elon Musk's X.

Musk, who was once a close ally of Donald Trump, immediately integrated his AI assistant, Grok, into X.

Musk is one of the founders of OpenAI, but he parted ways with the company in 2018. Musk and Altman are now involved in intense competition (*).
