The Shiro Corporation , Jakarta - The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) stated that the activities of PT Gag Nikel mining company are as follows: Gag Island , the development in Raja Ampat Regency has not impacted the surrounding marine ecosystem and coastal areas. This statement emerged after a team from the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) directly inspected the underwater conditions in the location. "We dived there, and the sedimentation is not much, it does not disturb the marine ecosystem," said Director General of Marine Resources Surveillance and Fisheries, Pung Nugroho Saksono, at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries office in Central Jakarta, Wednesday, June 18, 2025.
I also mentioned that mining activities do not affect the main land of Papua because they are quite far away. Nevertheless, he emphasized that they will continue to monitor mining activities on Pulau Gag, which is about 6,500 hectares in size. "We ensure that the coral reefs and the fish there are not disturbed. There are still many fish there, the young sharks are still abundant," he said.
PT Gag Nickel is the only mining company still operating in Raja Ampat after the government revoked four other business operation permits (IUP) on June 10, 2025.
However, some parties criticized the company's activities. They believe that mining on the small island violates regulations. The operations of the barges transporting mined materials are also considered potentially damaging to the coral reefs around Pulau Gag.
Wahana Lingkungan Hidup Indonesia (Walhi) notes that mining in small islands poses high risks. The carrying capacity of areas like Pulau Gag is limited. Mining activities can damage terrestrial and marine ecosystems as well as endanger the health of nearby communities. "Pulau Gag has shown signs of damage. Fish that were once easily found have now disappeared, coastal areas have turned into mining docks and mining dust causes respiratory problems," said Fanny from Walhi.
I also emphasize that mining on small islands contradicts Law No. 1 of 2014 concerning the Management of Coastal Areas and Small Islands. This regulation does not set mining as a priority, and even prohibits it. "Pulau Gag falls under that category. This ban was also emphasized through a decision by the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court, which stated that mining in small islands is considered a high-risk activity that can lead to permanent damage," he said.
